Stop Being Afraid

Ever hanger counts! My closet has been overflowing. It was time to create space. But nothing was ready to be thrown or given away. Or was it?

Those shirts had been hanging in my closet for years. I received them from two different marriage retreats. They reminded me of so many good things. They reminded me of the time that we spent together early in our marriage. They reminded me of the hours of research, conversation, and planning we did around fostering long-lasting marriages. They reminded me of the ministry opportunities we received when we first relocated to Tallahassee.

But that wasn't all. As time passed, those same shirts served as a reminder of the worst times within our marriage. They were a reminder of the deepest level of pain I ever experienced. They were a reminder of bad decisions. They were a reminder of emptiness and voids.

In spite of all the negatives, these shirts remained in my closet day after day, year after year. I didn't wear them but they were there.

Why was I holding onto them?

We hold on the things and people because
WE ARE AFRAID. WE ARE COMFORTABLE.

We're afraid of letting go. We're afraid of being alone. We're afraid of finding emptiness. We're afraid of missing out on something. We're afraid of starting over. We're afraid of walking away from the things that are comfortable. We're afraid of leaving familiar territory.

Stop being AFRAID!

"God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7

We are filled with POWER. In its most simplest form, power is defined as ability. We are able to

control our thoughts. Our thoughts impact our words, our actions, our habits, our character, and ultimately our destiny. When we get rid of the negative thoughts that cloud our minds and our judgment, we are able to replace them with positive thoughts that come with the grace and mercy we are granted with each new day.

We are filled with LOVE. God loved us enough that He gave His own son so that We could have life...and not just any life, but abundant life. The same love that was in God in within us. We have enough love within us to forgive others in the same way that God forgave us. We can truly forgive ourselves and others once we clear the clutter and clean the closets of mess in our lives.

We have a SOUND MIND. God created us in His own image. That means that we are able to think and reason in a sane and rational way. It means that we understand. Don't mistake this to mean that we automatically know why we face the various circumstances that come upon us. Rather, it means that we have the ability to understand that God is in complete and total control of our lives. God ways are higher than our ways. God prepares us for the unseen. When we recognize this, we are able to walk in the fullness of life.

Our spirits are filled with power, love, and sound minds which allows us to walk in faith instead of fear. Our spirits give us the strength we need to leave our comfort zones and to voluntarily enter a place of discomfort. Our spirits allow us to let go...to move on...to grow.

Whatever you are holding onto. Thoughts. Clothes. Trinkets. People. Pictures. Memories. Keepsakes. Phone numbers. Journals. It's time to let it go. It's time to move on. Those things evoke triggers. Triggers evoke pain. Those days are over. The past is behind you. The present is here. The future is ahead. It's time to walk in freedom. It's time for release.

You have the power and ability to thrive. You are filled with love and forgiveness. You understand that there's purpose in the pain.

Let's move together from a place of bondage to a place of freedom.
