Time to Shine

"It doesn't look like much, but this lamp gives me all the light I need."

I found myself telling this to a friend who visited my barren apartment. There is not much pomp and circumstance throughout the apartment. It is just enough for me to do what I am here to do. Work. Write. Run. Sleep. Eat. And, of course, Bathe.

For a split second, I felt a tinge of shame or embarrassment overtake me.

We were staring at a lamp that I have had for YEARS. It was a lamp that I saw sitting in the hallway, outside of my home office. It was out of place. Yet, it was in the perfect place.

It was sitting there. Unused. It was time to dust it off.

But why? There was not even a lamp shade. Any embarrassment I felt only lasted for a second.

I quickly reminded myself that this was a supplement. There is an overhead light in the room but this was just a little something extra. Something to give me light when I need it the most. When I am in a place a comfort. When I am in a place of lack. When I am in a place of emergency.

In the same way that this supplemental light becomes useful in any room, so do you.

In Matthew 5:14-16, God tells us that "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

You, too, are a light that is useful in many places, situations, and lives.

Sometimes, we miss the moment to shine because we are overlooking the packaging. We say we're too little. We're too big. We're bruised. We're old. We've been sitting in a corner too long.

We make excuses for dimming the light. We make excuses to prevent our light from shining.

But just like the lamp that was created to shine light, so were YOU. You were created to shine.

It is time for you to come out of hiding. It is time for you to get plugged in. It is time for you to find your rightful place.

You are meant to give light to certain people. Certain situations. Certain opportunities.

Go ahead! Hit the switch!

How will you let your light shine today?

Don't Harbor Unforgiveness

“ His mother left him and his father turned his back on him .” These words struck me like a bolt of lightening. They were words spoken directly to me. They depict a part of my life that I failed to acknowledge. A part of my life that I suppressed. A part of my life that I chose to ignore. Failure to acknowledge. Suppression. Ignoring. None of these things cause the past to flee. These things do not cause the past to change. Nor do they allow for full ability to walk into true purpose and authority. This is not an isolated story. With a human service and child welfare background, I know firsthand that this story is one in a million. But we also see it every day. If you're like me, you sometimes find your escape in movies and television series. Instead of spending time in your own realities, you spend time watching scripted realities. It's an opportunity to disengage ourselves from the characters on the screen. It's a way to passively accept or criticize the s
