Confession Time

I grew up in West Philadelphia, just a few blocks from the University of Pennsylvania. There were several stores within walking distance.  When I was around eight years old, there was a convenience store built and placed right in the middle of a block where UPenn students could get food and snacks. I'm pretty sure it was a WaWa. That quickly became one of my favorite stores.

My Favorite Childhood Bubble Gum Flavor
I remember going there one day with my mom. As always, I asked her to buy me pack of bubble gum and she said no. Wait, what?! I couldn't believe she told me no. It was less than a dollar. And I wanted it. But she sho nuff said no.

I was determined to get that gum. I found a way to get away from her while we were still in the store and I grabbed a pack of gum. I found a way to get the gum out of the store without her knowing it. Nope, I didn't pay for it. So yep, I stole it.

My mom and I got out of the store and were walking down the street. I was so happy. I did it. I was walking with my hands behind my back. I was holding the gum in both hands to make sure it was safe and didn't drop. We were almost home when she turned and asked me what I had behind my back. "Nothing," I told her. She didn't believe me so she asked me again. She finally realized that I had the pack of bubble gum that she told me I could not have. Ut oh!

Not only did my mom make me return it to the store. (How embarrassing!!) She tore my butt up when we got home.  In that moment, I realized that my negative actions impact others. My disobedience hurt my mom and because of that I was disappointed in myself.

Have you ever done something that you knew was wrong when you did it? Have you gotten caught up in a weak moment? A moment of infidelity? A moment of insecurity? I moment of lust? I moment of depression? A moment of longing? A moment of jealously? A moment of anger or rage? A moment of immorality? Did you feel bad afterwards? Did you feel convicted? How long did you hold onto that shame? Have you released yourself from that guilt?

If you haven't already, it's time to let go of the past. Forgive yourself. God is not holding on your mistakes and bad decisions, so why are you? 1 John 1:9 tells us that "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
  • Sometimes, we don't confess our sins because we erroneously believe that if we don't admit a thing that happened in the dark, then that thing will not become exposed in the light. The truth is everything done in darkness will come to light. It probably will not come out when you expect it to. It probably will not come out in the way to expect it to. It may not even come out from the person you expect it to come from. It WILL come out. Self confession is good for the soul and it's so much better than 3rd party exposure. God sees all and he knows all anyway. There's no need to try to hide your sins from him. Confess!
  • When you confess, you open up yourself up to the surgery of your soul. The forgiveness process creates wholeness. It restores. It replenishes. When we are are forgiven, God purifies us. Think about drinking water. Unpurified versus purified. There's a difference. Purified water is much better. It's consumable. It's digestible. It's palatable. It helps to make us stronger. These things combined helps to move forward in our purpose. It helps us to forgive others. It helps us to grow.
There is so much life ahead. Don't miss out on any of it simply because of refusal to let go of the past. Release yourself. Forgive yourself. You deserve it! There's much more in store for you! Even grape bubble gum 😉😇😂

Don't Harbor Unforgiveness

“ His mother left him and his father turned his back on him .” These words struck me like a bolt of lightening. They were words spoken directly to me. They depict a part of my life that I failed to acknowledge. A part of my life that I suppressed. A part of my life that I chose to ignore. Failure to acknowledge. Suppression. Ignoring. None of these things cause the past to flee. These things do not cause the past to change. Nor do they allow for full ability to walk into true purpose and authority. This is not an isolated story. With a human service and child welfare background, I know firsthand that this story is one in a million. But we also see it every day. If you're like me, you sometimes find your escape in movies and television series. Instead of spending time in your own realities, you spend time watching scripted realities. It's an opportunity to disengage ourselves from the characters on the screen. It's a way to passively accept or criticize the s
